Melbourne Day Trips - Phillip Island
Surrounded
by some of the best surf and swimming beaches in Victoria, Phillip
Island has a reputation as a family coastal getaway.
Just 26 kilometres long and 9 kilometres wide, Phillip Island is
a short stretch of land just over an hour south-east of Melbourne.
Accessible by passenger ferry from Crib Point or by bridge from San
Remo, the island is an ever popular holiday destination for
Melburnians and international tourists alike. Often described as
Victoria’s natural attraction, Phillip Island has an abundance of
wildlife including the ever-popular colony of Little Penguins.
On
Phillip Island you may see Little Penguins returning to their
burrows from the sea, as well as migratory shearwaters, koalas,
seals and native birds and pelicans all in protected habitat.
Further east, you might also spot dolphins, seals and whales in the
sheltered waters of Waratah Bay.
Further east along the Bass Coast you can find great board-riding
and surf fishing, and Andersons Inlet, which opens onto Bass Strait,
is popular with yachting enthusiasts. Stretching from Grantville to
Inverloch, the Bass Coast is rich in heritage townships, natural
attractions and scenic beauty, including the striking Bunurong
Marine Coastal Park.
